Kiero ja villintynyt on kuviin ja runoihin perustuva valokuvataidekirja, jossa puiden opastamana kuljetaan kohti aarniometsän villiyttä, Itse Metsää.

Kirjan esipuheessa pohditaan uskonnon merkitystä luontosuhteeseemme sekä ihmisen kyvyttömyyttä asettaa toiminnalleen rajoja, mutta runojen ja kuvien sisältönä on luonnon kaikkivoipaisuus, joka lopulta kuitenkin on ihmisen valtaa suurempi.

Kirja on henkilökohtainen rakkauden tunnustus luonnon valtoimenaan rönsyilevälle orgaanisuudelle ja elinvoimalle, maailmassa, jossa pyrkimyksenä on päinvastoin kesyttää kaikki ihmisen hallintaan ja muotoilla maailma suoraviivaiseksi.

Kirjan kuvat ovat pääosin eripuolilta Suomea, mutta mukana on myös kuvia mm. Japanista.

 

Crooked and Wild
”I have loved trees like brothers since my childhood, and trees – or their absence – are usually the first things that I notice in a view. They are fixed points in both the real landscape and the mindscape. Maintaining biodiversity and viability, trees are a precondition for the functioning of the earth’s ecosystems, and partners of human life, meeting places bearing religious and metaphysical meanings. They are the fascinating building blocks of the architecture of the forest, expressing form, space, depth, hues, light and rhythm in ways that permit endless variations of interpretation.

 

For some thirty years, trees and forests have also been an integral part of my work in photography, and I have been interested in trees in all their mundaneness. In my photography in general I have stayed away from seeking a heightened experience of some kind, and therefore I have not looked for trees that would be special when measured in some way, such as the oldest, thickest, tallest or strangest trees in the world. Instead, I instead wanted to see the miracle in the seemingly unimposing and ordinary, which despite its quotidian essence represents a wildness independent of humans and manifests its unique, unfettered form.”
